Dr. MAYIL NATARAJAN is the Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon at M.N. Orthopaedic Hospital, Chennai. He is a Sr. Consultant at Apollo Speciality Hospital and Apollo First Med Hospital, Chennai.

 

He was the Professor and Head of the Dept of Orthopaedic Surgery, (2005-09) and the 1st Director of the upgraded institute, Govt. General Hospital and Madras Medical College (2009). He was the 7th Vice Chancellor of The Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University (2009-12).


         He is an Orthopaedic Surgeon recognized for his pioneering work in Bone Cancer. He introduced the concept of Limb Salvage Surgery by Cost effective Indigenous Custom Mega Prosthesis as early as 1988. His personal series of 2250 cases of Custom Mega Prosthesis in 34 years (1988 to 2021) is the largest number by a single surgeon in the world. He propagated this technique all over the country. At present 20 out of 28 states in India and 3 out of 8 Union Territories are following this methodology. His vision is that no patient with bone cancer in India should lose his/her limb by the year 2030 (Amputation Free India).

        He has received 3 National Awards from the President of India, Shri A.P.J. Abdul Kalam,  Dr. B. C. Roy National Award (2004), National Award for Welfare of the Disabled (2005) and Padma Shri Award (2007). 

He was the President of the Academic BodiesThe Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association (2020), Indian Orthopaedic Association (2006) and Asia Pacific Musculoskeletal Tumour Society (2000-2002).
